Friday Friday!

That Friday Feeling!

UPDATE 18.03.2018: The Saturday night concert is full. Choirs registering from today will be invited to perform at the Friday night concert only.

As those who have been to Street Choirs before can attest, the Saturday ‘back-to-back’choir concert can seem overwhelmingly long and sometimes onerous. Therefore, in response to feedback from previous Festivals, , we are trying a new system this year – namely having two choir concerts instead of just one on Saturday.

Our plan is to have two equally weighted (there is no ‘top billing’!) concerts on Friday and Saturday nights. We plan to have about 20 choirs in each show, interspersed with local Brighton acts to provide a diverse and enjoyable 2 evenings’ entertainment!

In order for this to work, we need all choirs to consider whether they will be able to sing in the Friday night show, and say YES to positive change!

We know that many of you are coming from far flung locations, and, we will of course take this on board in our planning, BUT, in order for this to work, we need more choirs to be saying YES to FRIDAY!

If you are ‘local’ (the South East, or even South o’Sheffield) please please consider saying YES to FRIDAY! And a huge THANKS to those choirs coming from the Great North who have said that they can perform in the Friday show – it really really helps our planning.

So – if you have already signed up (welcome!) and – can you reconsider your Friday decision?

And – if you haven’t yet signed up PLEASE consider singing on the Friday instead of the Saturday!

Thanks choral comrades,

The Hullabaloo Crew

Choir Registration is Open!

Happy New Year, singing friends!

We hope you have had a wonderful winter break and are raring to go with a song-filled 2018!

Hullabaloo Community Quire is delighted and excited to be hosting Street Choirs Festival 2018, which takes place from Friday 29th June – Sunday 1st July in Brighton.

The Street Choirs Festival 2018 will be the 36th year of this wonderful, nomadic festival of song. Initially rooted in the Street Choir and protest singing movement. This superb choral tradition gathers together choirs of all styles, shapes and sizes from around Britain (and beyond) who sing together to affect positive and progressive change – whether it is social, political, spiritual or just for the love of song.

The Festival comprises a fantastically full weekend of performance, workshops and socialising. Those familiar with the structure will find all our favourite elements; massed sing, busking, workshops and a chance to perform for each other in concert. The Hullabaloo team has also taken on board your evaluative suggestions from previous years so you may also notice a couple of changes…please read on!

Street Choirs Festival 2018 will include double delights; 2 cracking concerts, 2 marvellous massed sings, 2 brilliant busking spots and 2 wonderful workshop slots – alongside the massed sing rehearsals, unforgettable late night singing in the bar and a community picnic to close the weekend in style.

Our main venue is the fabulous Brighton Dome where the two evening concerts and rehearsal for the massed sing will be staged.

Massed Sings

All singers come together to sing the 6 carefully chosen songs – words, scores and mp3s will be available for pre-learning on the website – which includes Billy Bragg’s Internationale. The Massed Sing rehearsal on Saturday morning will be led by 5 magnificent MDs in the fabulous Brighton Dome.

Our afternoon of street singing will begin with a short parade to the first Massed Sing spot – don’t forget your colourful, characterful banners! A second Massed Sing will take place later in the day…more details TBA.

Each participating choir will be allocated two sites so that they can wow the Brighton crowds with their own musical repertoire. (NB we have cut down the busking slots from 3 to 2 in order to give breathing space and the chance to see each other busking, as well as time to relax before the Saturday evening show!)

Evening Concerts

This year we have planned TWO fantastic evening concerts – on Friday and Saturday night – inviting each participating choir to perform. The choir performances will be interspersed with short sets from Brightonian musicians and performers…line up to be announced! This will enable our guests to have time to enjoy a wide range of performances and soak up the unique atmosphere of the famous Dome concert hall.

UPDATE 18.03.2018: The Saturday night concert is full. Choirs registering from today will be invited to perform at the Friday night concert only.

Sunday Workshops

We have put together a stunning selection of workshops led by some of the most acclaimed creative practitioners in the country. Full details of the workshops will be available on our website and participants will be able to register for their places online.

The Sunday workshops will be held at Greater Brighton Metropolitan College (which has lifts and accessible toilets).

Street Choir Picnic and Final Sing

The weekend will end, as has become traditional, with a Sunday lunchtime picnic – you may order this on individual registration or bring your own. It’s a final opportunity to get together, sing, exchange contacts and discuss your following year’s festival attendance – in Manchester!!

ChoirFest 2008!

As the programming for the 2018 festival gathers pace we’ve been looking back at the event we hosted nearly ten years ago – ChoirFest Brighton 2008.Front sheet of the 2008 Brighton SCF brochure.

As far as any of us can remember it was a fine event. A particular highlight being the late night Hokey Cokey in The Dome foyer bar!

We’ve been plundering the 2008 brochure to help us remember what happened and to explain to new Hulla member the joys of the event – Where did the busking take place? Massed sing on the seafront? Did the volunteers really wear orange?

Here is the front page of that very brochure. Thanks to Audrey for keeping it in such pristine condition!

Do you have a brochure front page to share? #streetchoirs

Thank you Kendal! #streetchoirs

What a brilliant time we had! A hardy contingent of Hullabeanies made the journey to the Lake District to join with 900 other singers at the 2017 Street Choirs Festival in Kendal. Thank you to all involved in making such a brilliant festival.

The photos show us at the massed sing, busing on the steps of Kendal Library, on stage in the evening, and then singing in a cave at the post festival event.

It was great to see so many old friends and to meet new ones.

We are left with loads of great ideas to take back to Brighton planning for the 2018 festival!

Hulla is Heading North!

Hullabaloo Community Quire is getting ready to head north for the 2017 Street Choirs Festival 2017 in Kendal. About a third of the choir is making the trip north to take part. The Festival is always a popular fixture in the Hullabaloo diary, and we enjoy meeting up with our street choir friends and hearing all the other brilliant choirs.

Work on the 2018 festival continues. The advance committee for the 2018 Festival has already been looking at venues for the festival in Brighton, scoping busking spots and accommodation options, and building funding bids!

We will be updating the website with more info about the festival when it becomes available. In the meantime, choir reps are welcome to get in touch using the contact form on the contact page.

The Work has Begun!

The first meetings have taken place and we have started gathering information and ideas to create the 2018 Street Choirs Festival in Brighton. Members of Hullabaloo Community Quire are working on budget planning and fundraising, website design, locations and accommodation ideas.
