Happy New Year, singing friends!
We hope you have had a wonderful winter break and are raring to go with a song-filled 2018!
Hullabaloo Community Quire is delighted and excited to be hosting Street Choirs Festival 2018, which takes place from Friday 29th June – Sunday 1st July in Brighton.
The Street Choirs Festival 2018 will be the 36th year of this wonderful, nomadic festival of song. Initially rooted in the Street Choir and protest singing movement. This superb choral tradition gathers together choirs of all styles, shapes and sizes from around Britain (and beyond) who sing together to affect positive and progressive change – whether it is social, political, spiritual or just for the love of song.
The Festival comprises a fantastically full weekend of performance, workshops and socialising. Those familiar with the structure will find all our favourite elements; massed sing, busking, workshops and a chance to perform for each other in concert. The Hullabaloo team has also taken on board your evaluative suggestions from previous years so you may also notice a couple of changes…please read on!
Street Choirs Festival 2018 will include double delights; 2 cracking concerts, 2 marvellous massed sings, 2 brilliant busking spots and 2 wonderful workshop slots – alongside the massed sing rehearsals, unforgettable late night singing in the bar and a community picnic to close the weekend in style.
Our main venue is the fabulous Brighton Dome where the two evening concerts and rehearsal for the massed sing will be staged.
All singers come together to sing the 6 carefully chosen songs – words, scores and mp3s will be available for pre-learning on the website – which includes Billy Bragg’s Internationale. The Massed Sing rehearsal on Saturday morning will be led by 5 magnificent MDs in the fabulous Brighton Dome.
Our afternoon of street singing will begin with a short parade to the first Massed Sing spot – don’t forget your colourful, characterful banners! A second Massed Sing will take place later in the day…more details TBA.
Each participating choir will be allocated two sites so that they can wow the Brighton crowds with their own musical repertoire. (NB we have cut down the busking slots from 3 to 2 in order to give breathing space and the chance to see each other busking, as well as time to relax before the Saturday evening show!)
This year we have planned TWO fantastic evening concerts – on Friday and Saturday night – inviting each participating choir to perform. The choir performances will be interspersed with short sets from Brightonian musicians and performers…line up to be announced! This will enable our guests to have time to enjoy a wide range of performances and soak up the unique atmosphere of the famous Dome concert hall.
UPDATE 18.03.2018: The Saturday night concert is full. Choirs registering from today will be invited to perform at the Friday night concert only.
We have put together a stunning selection of workshops led by some of the most acclaimed creative practitioners in the country. Full details of the workshops will be available on our website and participants will be able to register for their places online.
The Sunday workshops will be held at Greater Brighton Metropolitan College (which has lifts and accessible toilets).
Street Choir Picnic and Final Sing
The weekend will end, as has become traditional, with a Sunday lunchtime picnic – you may order this on individual registration or bring your own. It’s a final opportunity to get together, sing, exchange contacts and discuss your following year’s festival attendance – in Manchester!!
Registration – what next?
To be part of Street Choirs Festival 2018, you need to register both your choir and your individual singers.
Choir registration will give us an indication of how many choirs will be coming and we can start work on the programme – so if you know your choir would like to come, please register soon!
Registration for your individual singers(£42/30 per person +£1.60 admin fee) will follow, we expect in late February.
This is where you can fill out your individual forms, get sorted with accommodation and tell us what us you need.
If you have any questions or queries then please use our Contact Page to get in touch.
